The Frangioni Laboratory, and its major collaborator, the laboratory of Robert E. Lenkinski, Ph.D., form the discovery engine for the BIDMC Center for Molecular Imaging. It is in these two laboratories that new contrast agents and new imaging technologies are developed.

The Longwood Small Animal Imaging Facility (Longwood SAIF), directed by Drs. Frangioni and Lenkinski, permits proof of principle for new discoveries. It also serves as a resource for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the entire research community of the Longwood Medical Area of Harvard Medical School.

A new laboratory for FDA compliance, now being established in the Center, will permit translation of novel imaging technology from the "bench to the bedside," with an emphasis on safety and efficiency.

Taken together, the Center aims to push the boundaries of what is possible in molecular imaging. Long-term goals include developing novel imaging technologies with sensitivity approaching the single cell limit and the development of high-throughput screening for disease-specific targeting ligands.

John V. Frangioni, M.D., Ph.D., is an attending physician and Associate Professor in the , , at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor of Radiology in the at the BIDMC. His academic appointments as an Associate Professor of Medicine and an Associate Professor of Radiology are at Harvard Medical School. His laboratory focuses on in vivo imaging technologies, including chemistry, detectors, and their fusion.

, is a Professor of Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His laboratory focuses on novel contrast agents and detection technology for magnetic resonance imaging.
